Find Your Highway Authority

Enter the postcode where the pothole is located. We'll tell you which authority is responsible for maintaining that road.

Who is responsible?

In the UK, different authorities are responsible for maintaining different types of roads:

  • National Highways — motorways and major A-roads (trunk roads) in England
  • Transport Scotland — motorways and trunk roads in Scotland
  • Welsh Government (Transport) — motorways and trunk roads in Wales
  • Your local highway authority — all other public roads (this could be your local council, metropolitan borough, or unitary authority)

Not sure about the road type?

Most potholes are on local roads maintained by your local highway authority. If you hit a pothole on a motorway (M-road) or major A-road, the responsible authority is usually National Highways, Transport Scotland, or the Welsh Government depending on the country.

Our claim wizard will help you identify the correct authority when you start your claim.
